Colombia’s tourism sector is thriving, but the department of Tolima (in the Andean region) wants to take it to the next level. That’s why Tiqets is partnering up with the area’s tourism board to digitalize their entire network and create new avenues to promote the area’s rich culture and history.
We sat down with Alexander Vicens, Head of Tourism in Ibagué (Tolima’s capital) to talk about the region’s rich heritage and how
What makes Tolima unique?
Tolima is a region in central Colombia, and at 8000m above sea level, it has some of the country’s most extreme climates. You can see incredible glaciers on one side, but travel 15 minutes by car and you can enjoy sweltering 30-degree temperatures! Tolima is also home to one of the country’s most popular natural parks, the Los Nevados National Natural Park, one of the best representations of Colombia’s diverse ecosystem.
How can Tiqets help Tolima on a global scale? Why have you chosen them for this particular project?
We chose Tiqets for this international project because we realized that many of the attractions and museums we have around the region could be appealing to European visitors. We believe it’s essential to have the right digital tools to promote them, which makes Tiqets perfect for the job!
What excites you the most about this collaboration?
The thing we’re most excited about is being able to help regional museums and attractions to promote their attractions in other countries around the world in a quick and easy way. Using alternative digital channels with multilingual content will increase their visibility and give them the opportunity to showcase their venues to an even wider international audience.
What’s the current situation of Colombian tourism?
It’s very promising. The tourism sector has grown steadily over the last few years – last year it grew twice as fast compared to the global average! Colombia, with its incredible nature and culture, is a unique destination. And Tolima is at the very center of that growth. That’s one of the reasons why we took part in the International Tourism Fair, FITUR, in Madrid, at the beginning of the year. We’ll also be heading to Vitrina Turística ANATO
(Asociación Colombiana de Agencias de Viajes y Turismo) 2019 from 27 February to 1 March in Bogotá.
What’s the state of your website right now? What results do you expect in a year once your portals are digital?
In a year we hope to see a sharp increase in high-value visitors. The emphasis isn’t placed on the number of tourists, but on attracting holiday visitors with higher daily spends that recognize the importance of Tolima’s cultural heritage and efforts we make in maintaining it.
How are you going to promote the new online services to internal tourism boards?
We’re in talks with city officials and other departments to establish a new digital platform in two months. We want to offer all of them the same opportunity to use Tiqets’ technology and network, so they can easily access all the museums and attractions we offer under our department’s “Sinfonia Natural” (Natural Symphony) slogan.
What are your goals for the internationalization of Colombian tourism?
Our highest priority is maintaining our sustainable development, especially where our natural and cultural venues are concerned. More so than tourism, we want to make it into a transformative experience and show visitors the best of Tolima’s customs, culture, and history.
