Check out what to do in Amsterdam this month and get the lowdown on the best of the Dutch capital. This month we’re recommending evening zoo fun, iconic street markets, summer concerts and a café that’s dedicated to all things feline.

August highlights

Summer lovin’ is well underway, and Amsterdam is in full celebration mode. Nearly every venue has something special on, so it’s hard to pick just two to feature this month. We decided to go the underdogs: two incredible locations that have pulled out all the stocks this August. There’s ZOOmeravoden at Artis Zoo, a nocturnal animal kingdom feast for the whole family, and Rythm and Roots at the Tropenmuseum, an exhibition that will have you singing and dancing in no time!

ZOOmeravonden ARTIS

Every Saturday night, till the end of August, ZOOmeravonden is tempting guests to mingle with lions, tigers and bears… well, outside of their enclosures at least.

Rythm and Roots

See the new exhibition at the Tropenmuseum, featuring iconic items including guitars from Jimi Hendrix and Chuck Berry, and Elvis’ leather jacket. No matter your musical taste, you’re guaranteed to find some rhythms here to get you tapping your toes, if not outright shimmying.

Food & Drinks

One thing we know for sure is that Amsterdammers love their food and drink (in moderation… more or less). If it’s variety you’re looking for, Albert Cuyp Market’s stalls are a match for all tastes, along with vintage clothes stalls and bright flowers. If you just want to enjoy the sunshine, Roest’s beach and kooky decor is the perfect choice for people watching and having a beer or five.

What to do in Amsterdam

Albert Cuyp Market

Unlike most weekend markets, Albert Cuyp opens from Monday to Saturday from 9:30 to 17:00. Over a century year old, street traders and pushcarts still congregate in the De Pijp district today. The market is definitely worth checking out, selling a range of goods including clothes, jewelry, fabrics, food, and flowers. Head down and buy a traditional Dutch stroopwafel for the walk ahead!

Roest is a unique spot that embodies Amsterdam Oost’s resurgence over the last few years. Their edgy, industrial city beach is a relaxed spot to spend the afternoon with a group of friends. They’re also entertainment pros, and regularly host special events, vintage kilo sales and festivals.

The inside is just as fascinating, with rusty old machinery contrasting with velveteen sofas and fancy lamps. You can hang out during the day for coffee or head there at night for one of its many eclectic theme nights –  think 50s rock dancing or Grand Theft Auto inspired DJ sets. Whether it’s summer or any other time of year, Roest’s got you covered!

Tiqets’ top picks

There’s no excuse to stay indoors! At Tiqets we love sunny days, even if we don’t see many of them in Amsterdam. That’s exactly why the Westergasfabriek is the obvious choice for this month’s top picks. A former gas plant, it’s now the go-to place for cool bars, restaurants and other cultural treasures, surrounded by the natural beauty of Westerpark.

If you’re looking for a classical night out instead, try Robeco SummerNights. Its nightly concerts cover all musical genres, from classical, jazz, torch songs, and film scores. It’s only on through July and August, so make sure to not miss performances by some of of the top musicians in the Netherlands.

A gas plant first built in 1885, Westergasfabriek’s purpose was to bring light to the streets of Amsterdam.  Now it’s a different kind of beacon, calling people to meet, work and relax. Set in Westerpark, its historic factory buildings have been transformed into a cultural haven filled with bars, restaurants, clubs, galleries and shops.

Every venue has its own selling point,  but most locals will recommend heading to Troost, a brewery complete with a bar and shop where you can taste their special brew, and Het IJscuypje, a delicious ice cream shop that’s ideal for cooling down on warmer days.

Robeco SummerNights

The Robeco SummerNights Concerts are the best way to experience a live concert in one of the finest concert buildings in the world: the Concertgebouw. Over July and August there are regular concerts, with music selections from classical, jazz, torch songs, and film scores. The performers are top musicians from the Netherlands and around the world. Soak up culture, melody and atmosphere.

Want something different?

Last, but not least, it’s time to give the weird and wonderful a go. It may not be on most guides, but Amsterdam’s Cat Cabinet is one of the quirkier venues in Amsterdam. Filled with anything and everything cat related, you’ll either love it or hate it. It’s an alternative twist for a city afternoon, and a funny tale (or tail in this case) for friends and family back home!

Cat Cabinet

You’ve heard of cat cafes? Amsterdam’s gone and put a far classier spin on the concept with an entire canal house crammed with our feline friends, plus a load of amazing cat-related art! Make someone’s day with a surprise visit to The Cat Cabinet and see works by top artists in a series of uniquely styled rooms. It’s the purrrfect day out for cat fans everywhere!
